LG Washer FE Error Explained
The LG washer FE error (often displayed as F E or Flood Error) is a safety code that warns of an overfill, leak, or water level problem inside the washer. This code appears when the washer detects unexpected water accumulation in the tub or base pan or when the water level sensor/pressure system reports a fault. If ignored, FE can lead to overflowing, water damage to floors and nearby structures, electrical shorts, longer cycle interruptions, and repeated drain attempts that waste water and energy. Users commonly notice sudden stops mid-cycle, standing water in the drum, or the machine refusing to spin or drain when FE is active.
Common Causes
- Blocked or kinked drain hose preventing proper drainage
- Faulty drain pump or clogged pump filter
- Defective or clogged water level sensor / pressure switch
- Leaking inlet hoses, internal hoses, or tub seal causing water to collect in the base
- Stuck or malfunctioning water inlet valve allowing continuous water flow
- Tripped float switch or emergency overflow switch detecting water in the base pan
- Control board or PCB error misreading sensor inputs
- Incorrect installation or improper drain height causing backflow
- External plumbing issues such as slow household drain or sewer backup
Troubleshooting Steps
- Power reset: Unplug the washer or turn off the breaker for 5 minutes, then restart to see if the code clears.
- Turn off water supply: Close both hot and cold inlet valves to prevent further flooding while you inspect.
- Check visible hoses: Inspect inlet and drain hoses for kinks, clogs, or obvious leaks. Straighten kinks and replace damaged hoses.
- Inspect the drain pump and filter: For front-load models, remove the pump access cover and clean the filter/trap of lint, coins, or debris that could block drainage.
- Verify drain hose placement: Ensure the drain hose is at the correct height (manufacturer recommended) and not inserted too far into a standpipe which can cause siphoning/backflow.
- Look for water in the base pan: Tip the washer slightly (with two people) or remove the cabinet to inspect the base for pooling. If water is present, dry it and locate the leak source.
- Check the pressure hose and sensor: Inspect the small rubber tube between the tub and pressure sensor for clogs, kinks, or disconnection. Replace the pressure switch if faulty.
- Test the water inlet valve: If water continues filling with the machine off, the inlet valve may be stuck open and should be replaced.
- Run a diagnostic mode: Use the washer’s service diagnostic to read error history and run self-tests (refer to your model’s service manual for entry steps).
- Inspect electronic controls: If sensors and valves test OK, the main control board may be misinterpreting signals—consult a technician to test or replace the PCB.
- Perform a controlled test cycle: After repairs or cleaning, run a short drain
